They're technically complex to design, especially within UK building regulations. A bespoke service takes all that hassle off your hands, but the cost of design, manufacture, and installation can quickly outpace the budget for a smaller project.

Our kit staircases are designed and manufactured to British Standards, giving any competent self-builder — or the professional they hire — everything they need to install a quality staircase at a fraction of the bespoke cost. Not all kits are created equal, though. Material thickness, fixings, and finish all make a difference, and QStairs doesn't cut corners on any of them.
Choosing the right size
The first step is understanding how the staircase will be used and by whom. QStairs kits come in two categories: Category A for occasional domestic use and Category B for more frequent or commercial use — each meeting different compliance criteria.
Height is determined by the distance between your two finished floor levels. Our kits cover a range from 0.6m to 4m, and every kit is designed to maintain compliant headroom on every step. (We exclude the 1.9m–2.3m range for exactly that reason.) Above 4m, additional structural support is required — and we'd recommend going bespoke at that point.
One practical advantage: even if your measurements aren't perfect, each kit has up to 10mm of flexibility, so a small error won't leave you with unusable parts.
Finish and appearance
Once the practical decisions are made, it's time to choose how your staircase will look. All mild steel components are hot-dip galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461:2022 under ISO 9001 — a far more durable finish than the electroplated coatings found on cheaper imports.
For coastal locations or added peace of mind, powder coating is available in four colours: RAL 7015 Slate Grey, RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey, RAL 9005 Jet Black, and RAL 9010 Pure White — all paired with a striking black handrail.
