Building Regulations & Categories

What is a Category A staircase? A Category A small private spiral stair is intended for use by a limited number of people who are generally familiar with the staircase. For example, an internal stair in a dwelling serving one room not being a living room or a kitchen, an external access stair to an office not used by the public, or spiral fire escape stairs for a small number of people.

What is a Category B staircase? A Category B private stair can do everything a Category A stair can, and can also provide the main access to the upper floor of a private dwelling. (More detail available on their Building Regulations page.)

Measurements & Sizing

How do I measure for my staircase? Use a tape measure or laser measure to measure the vertical distance between finished floor levels. This is the distance from the finished lower floor (e.g. paved patio) to the finished upper floor (decking/landing).

Weight & Structure

How much does a staircase kit weigh? This will depend on the size of stair ordered, but most kits weigh between 300 and 400kg, with a maximum weight of 400kg. You should consult your own structural engineer to ensure your foundation is adequate.

Materials

What material are the kits made from? Kits are fabricated in steel with a non-slip pattern to the treads.

Fixings

Are fixings included? Fixings to secure the landing and the base of the stair are not supplied, as they vary depending on what you are fixing the stairs on and to – for example; concrete, plaster board, timber, etc.

All fixings to assemble the stair are supplied with instructions.

Landing size

We provide a square landing in the same finish as the rest of the stair kit you choose.

Cat A 1500mm radius landing is approximately 950mm x 820mm

Cat B 1900mm radius landing is approximately 1150mm x 1020mm

See Section 6 of their Sales Policy for cancellation under Distance Selling and refunds for faulty goods.

Installation

Do I need special equipment to install? Yes. For working at height, an access tower is recommended, and a genie lift for installing the landing. A risk assessment is always recommended before starting installation.

How long does installation take? This depends on the experience of the installers, but an estimate of one to two days is given. A minimum of two people are required.

Is installation included? No - stair kits are offered as a supply-only product for self-installation. We can offer an installation service at an additional cost – please get in touch to discuss.
