Hot-Dip Galvanised Steel: Why It Matters for Your Spiral Staircase

If you're choosing an external spiral staircase kit, you've probably come across the term hot-dipped galvanised steel. But what does it actually mean, and why does it matter?

What is hot-dipped galvanising?

Hot-dipped galvanising is the process of submerging steel in molten zinc at around 850°C. At that temperature, the zinc chemically bonds with the steel, becoming part of the material itself — not just a coating sitting on the surface.

How is that different from zinc-coated steel?

Zinc coating uses an electrical current to deposit a much thinner layer of zinc onto the steel surface. It's fine for indoor use, but in outdoor conditions - exposed to rain, temperature changes, and moisture - it won't hold up in the same way. Hot-dip galvanised coatings can be up to ten times thicker, which means significantly better corrosion resistance and a much longer lifespan with little to no maintenance required.
